What are the three main arguments given by advertising’s critics and by its supporters?

Obviously not everybody is a fan on the advertising.  Many critics argue that advertising is hurting more Americans than helping.  Of course advertisers offer a counter to every argument.

Those who oppose advertising point out that the cost of goods and services are higher because of advertising costs.  The cost is essentially passed to the public.  The critics state products would be much cheaper if advertising costs were not present.  Advertisers claim that getting the word out to the public means that the quantity of items sold go up and therefore costs go down.

Critics worry that people will buy goods and services they simply don’t need.  This is a case of the consumer having blind judgment and being sold on great advertising and not necessarily the product.  Many quality products that are generic exist and do not advertise.  The consumers may spend more than necessary for the same item.  The advertisers claim that the consumers decide for themselves which products they want.

Anti-advertising critics cite that competition is reduced and monopolies can be generated by advertising.  Leaving startup companies and generic alternatives to fail.  This reduction of choice can cost citizens countless amounts of money.  Advertisers say that they want to keep the public informed of products and that advertising is the best way possible.

I personally think advertising has a place in this world.  As long as consumers don’t suffer from higher cost, lack of competition, and increased consumption of junk.
