A communicator that has cognitive dissonance would benefit
because they would be able to examine both sides of an argument very closely.
The communicator can then make informed decisions as to what information is
delivered and in what way.
If a communicator is passionate about one side of the
argument and does not research the other side, then they are not informed and
the message will be weak. Any opportunity for another communicator to tear away
at the facts may cause the original message to be lost. It also raises some
ethical flags, because the information needs to be researched and the other
side needs to be understood. This could cause serious trouble for a
communicator with libel and slander laws.
A communicator with a little cognitive dissonance benefits
as they would not likely make this mistake.
Cognitive dissonance found in an audience would also help a
communicator, as it gives an audience that can be impacted. As individuals hold
two different beliefs, it gives the communicator an opportunity to sway them in
one direction. This type of communication would benefit from having strong
information that has been validated. The
presentation of week information may cause the audience to lose interest or
sway in the opposite direction.
